If auction winner cancelled, is there any way you can buy the item as the 2nd place bidder?

Main Post:

The seller relisted the auction. Is it just asking nicely if you can have it? Probably say no as they can make more money starting a new auction?

Top Comment: The seller has the option to offer the item to the second place bidder, but the seller is not obligated to do so. Once the item has been relisted the seller is unlikely to backtrack, though you should be able to bid on the new listing. You may even be able to win at a lower price than the previous auction, if the winner has been blocked from bidding.

ELI5: What ends up happening when the winning bidder at an auction cannot pay or does not pay?

Main Post: ELI5: What ends up happening when the winning bidder at an auction cannot pay or does not pay?

Top Comment: I silent bid on an autographed picture. Then shit hit the fan and I couldn't buy it. I told the auction and it went to the next highest bidder and they thanked me for being upfront, honest, timely. It depends on the auction of course.

[NJ] Auction winner took my car by mistake, auction company refuses to give info or refund me.

Main Post:

Hi,

I won a car from a government auction done by a third party contractor. There were three vehicles in total in the auction, but only one worked (which was the one I won). I went to go pick it up today and it’s missing, likely taken by the other auction winner because he was in the office the same time I was getting paperwork.

The auction company refuses to give me his info or provide a refund, what are my options?

What does the auction company propose? Surely their position isn't "sorry you lost the car and we're keeping your money." Have they asked you for a couple days to sort this out? Something else?

The amount of eBay auction winners not paying…..is too damn high!

Main Post:

I’ve had to relist seven things in the past three weeks, and got two more on deck at the moment. Such a waste of time. Only glimmer of hope with this nuisance, was the last eBay seller community survey. There were questions pertaining to requiring a payment method on file to be able to bid on items. A payment method that would be charged immediately after winning an auction. I honestly don’t know why that hasn’t been a thing from the start.

Top Comment:

It will soon be a thing, but for now...it's advised to just list your items as BIN (fixed prices) with immediate payment required and no offers (unless you see a new update indicating offers will now get immediate payment).

Is Accounting a "winner-takes-all" or "auction" market?

Main Post:

Currently reading "So Good They Cant Ignore You" by Cal Newport and in the book, he also explains that every type of profession can be considered either a "winner takes all" type of market, or an "auction" market.

"In a winner takes all market, mastery (or at least proficiency) of one skill is the most important thing. An example -- if you're a comedy writer, the most important thing that matters is your ability to write good scripts. You wouldn't enter this "winner takes all" market and then try to get really good at carpentry-- it simple doesn't serve a purpose in your career endeavors, and won't help you become a better writer. Alternatively, in auction markets, it’s best to build and accumulate a variety of different skills. For example, a venture capitalist does many things -- pure strategic allocation of capital is just one aspect of their job. He or she also needs to be a great networker, have above average communication and presentation abilities, be able to keep up with market trends, and have a deep sense for product and business strategy."

So I'm curious to know what everyone's opinion is about accounting specifically?

Top Comment:

A lot to unpack here, but simple answer is:

Tax, Treasury and the CFO are winner take all.

Most other areas of accounting are auction (accounting, reporting, FP&A).

Edit: background: tax and Treasury can significantly effect income. Most other accounting functions are considered costs, and while they support the business, the business will get more credit.

Some organizations may be "finance driven" that can shift this around. The above is intended to be more of a general assessment.

Fulfilled an obligation to a silent auction winner. “Peter cooks you a steak” was hotly contested at a recent fundraiser.

Main Post:

A local deli (shoutout to Tonysdelipa.com) hooked me up with a massive rib roast. I cut it up into some thick steaks, seasoned and left them in the fridge for a day, sous vide for about 5 hours at 137, and then hard sear on the big green egg. The winning bidders had an excellent meal.

The fifth “weird” looking steak was actually from squaring off the end of the roast. That was my practice steak for sear time and temp. Still turns out amazing...

Well that settles it, I’ll be putting money towards any “Peter cooks you a steak” items in an auction from now on

Bizarre auction behavior where, after the auction ends, the page refreshes over and over to add more time and more bids. What is happening here!?

Top Comment: The countdown clock on your screen is just a script running in the browser window. It's not synced to ebay unless you refresh the page. Hit F5 or reload page button periodically to refresh the page next time. (However more people are noticing this lately so that script may not be working very well.)
